I believe that there are a few things that must be looked at when we learn about senior home safety. I believe that the most important thing to have is a working phone. If a senior is not easily mobile, or has a condition that prevents them from yelling loudly, a phone might be the one thing that can save their life. Another item I believe every senior should have is a panic button. Many companies manufacture these devices in the form of wristbands, and with the push of a button help will be en route. These are just a couple of the many ways that you can make a seniors home safer for them.

Parents should be taking on the responsibility of obtaining fire protection for kids. Mainly in the home, I think it is important that parents protect their children from the dangers that a fire can bring by laying down ground rules about how to evacuate in the case of a fire and also how to operate a fire extinguisher if the fire is small enough and they are in their early teens. In addition to placing fire extinguishers around the home, another solid investment to make would be fire blankets that can be easily accessed in case of a fire emergency.

The term “fire escape” often evokes the metal structures found on the sides of apartment buildings in major cities. While these metalworks may provide a romantic setting for declarations of love in movies like “West Side Story,” they are not typically considered aesthetic architectural enhancements. Codes in many cities and neighborhood prohibit them. They’re not pretty, but they’re durable, reliable, and fire-resistant. In the event of a fire in a building with two or more stories, residents must have a means of exiting safely. Elevators will often stop working once an alarm sounds. Exit stairs in public buildings are required to be enclosed by fire-resistant material, but this may not be the case in private homes. A good alternative is the rope fire escape ladder. It stores easily, hooks onto a window sill, and provides sturdy, safe descent when stairs are blocked. Two- and three-story models are available from $75.00 to $150 at your hardware or home-improvement store.

In an organization of any size, understanding safety procedures is of utmost importance. Before operations begin, management should have a plan in place that communicates steps to be taken to prevent, control and react to emergencies of all types. Fire safety is one of the most basic areas where such planning should be the focus. A safety plan will allow all personnel to be familiar with the layout of the building, how to exit from it in an orderly manner, and how best to be protected from such events as fires, chemical spills and accidents. Functions in an emergency should be determined and analyzed, and the names of individuals present should be assigned to these various functions. For example, the operations manager may be assigned to perform head counts if an evacuation is called for. The shop supervisor may be the person who coordinates fire drills or summons emergency personnel. Whatever the plan, it should be in writing. The safety coordinator or fire warden signs off on the plan, which is communicated effectively to employees at regularly scheduled safety training meetings.

My husband and I went to the local big box store to buy a fire safe box on Sunday. I was surprised that they didn’t carry them. We ended up going to Sears in the mall where they had several choices. We bought one and took it back to the truck, then headed back inside the mall. Funny, but we are kind of addicted to mall food; we love the food court. He likes Chick Filet and I like any of the pizza places. We saw some friends and ended up taking in a movie after we ate. I love a Sunday at the mall!

It was my friend’s birthday and thought I would try and cheer her up. I absolutelyy love making my own cards. I made a card and put a photo of fire hose couplings on the cover. She often finds them to be highly amusing as once she happened to pick up a hose and this huge rush of water came out which nearly knocked this guy over who she disliked. When I gave her the card, she could not stop laughing and wanted to know where I had bought it. She has no idea that I make my own cards. Maybe I could produce an entire array of cards depicting fire equipment.

You must have a smoke detector in your home. This is a critical investment in your safety and the primary reason why fire deaths have declined in the United States over the past fifty year If you have a natural gas connection, fireplace or oil based heating system, you need carbon monoxide alarms in your home. A carbon monoxide detector will provide warning of carbon monoxide build up from a gas leak, poorly ventilated boiler or fireplace or furnace back-draft. It is also wise to use a carbon monoxide detector in the same room as any backup diesel power generators and kerosene stoves to let you know if your backup power or heat source is releasing dangerous levels of carbon monoxide. Do you live in Appalachia or other areas with high levels of radon? Then you should consider a radon detector in your home. While rarely initially fatal, high levels of exposure over time increase your risk of lung cancer. A thermal leak detector is a good addition to any older home. Finding thermal leaks, both in the winter and in the summer, helps you seal up the home and reduce electrical usage. When sealing up a drafty home, be sure to have a carbon monoxide detector installed to prevent dangerous gas buildups.

I’ve been researching different types of fire resistant fire retardant because I’m interested in using some in my child’s bedroom. I recently went to a fire prevention seminar and they mentioned this fire resistant fire retardant and I had never heard of it. I think it’s wonderful that such a product is manufactured. A person can never be too careful when they are preventing damage to their home or the lives of their families. I am going to purchase fire resistant fire retardant to use in my home, but I’m going to start in my son’s bedroom because he is the most important thing in my life.

Fire extinguishers are an item that everyone can agree is good to have, but few of us own. Any public building and almost every workplace have a variety of fire extinguishers, but the average home likely has none. A small chemical or CO2 extinguisher placed strategically could have saved many thousands of homes in the past decade, and if people understood their importance, would save thousands in the coming decade. Whether a kitchen grease fire, a malfunctioning appliance or a candle placed too close to a drape, a home extinguisher would make a difference. It would save property, homes and even lives for only a few dollars. Can you afford not to have one?

Like most people, there is a high probability that your family is in possession of old photographs. These items may have been in your family for a long time; sometimes you don’t even know when a photograph was taken. It is important that since these pictures are priceless, they must be protected from unexpected but very probable accidents such as fires. A good investment for protecting these objects would be an electronic fireproof box or safe, wherein you can keep these treasured items and make sure that in case something bad happens, your precious memories are safely intact and be well protected.
